ACDP BMW Modules, Part 2: Adapters, Boards, and Licenses
ACDP BMW modules let you take on a wide range of BMW key and immobilizer work, but module numbers alone don’t give you a complete shopping list. In Part 1, we covered the core BMW package: Modules 1, 2, 3, and 7, plus their adapters and licenses. Part 2 picks up from there. It covers the newer BMW systems, the DME ISN bench adapters, and the separate licenses that often get missed until you’re standing at the car.
For a working locksmith, the real question isn’t which module to buy. It’s which combination of ACDP host, module authorization, interface board, adapter, and license you need for a specific vehicle and a specific operation.
Quick Refresher: The Core ACDP BMW Key Programming Modules
- Module 1 — BMW CAS: Key functions for supported CAS generations. The procedure depends on the CAS version and whether you have a working key.
- Module 2 — BMW FEM/BDC: Supported FEM and earlier BDC key programming for F-body cars and SUVs. Some jobs use a bench/interface-board procedure, and all-keys-lost requirements can differ from add-key work.
- Module 3 — BMW DME ISN: Supported BMW DME ISN operations. The right DME adapter is set by the actual ECU model and processor, not the engine name. Some procedures require additional authorization.
- Module 7 — BMW Key Refresh: Renewal/refresh for supported BMW keys. It unlocks F-body BMW OEM keys for reuse.
Newer ACDP BMW Modules: 27, 31, and 38
Once you’re past the core package, these three modules add more DME and BDC work to ACDP.
Module 27 — BMW MSV80 / MSD8X / MSV90
Module 27 handles supported DME ISN read/write and cloning operations. The package lists distinct connection boards for MSV80, MSD80/MSD81, MSD85/MSD87, and MSV90. Buying the module doesn’t get you every separate software license, or the adapters needed for other DME families.
Module 31 — BMW F-Chassis BDC via OBD
Module 31 adds supported F-chassis BDC immobilizer operations through OBD, using a DoIP adapter where required. It’s a useful addition, but it doesn’t replace every Module 2 function. If you see a lot of F-chassis work, plan on keeping both.
Module 38 — BMW BDC2 / BDC3 / BCP
Module 38 supports selected key functions on newer G-body BMWs. BDC2 key learning, BDC2 all-keys-lost, and BDC3/BCP original-key copying are different functions. Each may need different boards and authorizations. Certain all-keys-lost jobs require the BDC2 key-learning platform and a separate authorization.
There’s also an antenna test adapter that goes with Module 38. Don’t skip it, because it’s how you test the keys before the customer drives away.
BMW DME ISN Adapters: Matching the Board to the ECU
ACDP offers a range of integrated bench interface boards for BMW and MINI DMEs. These matter most when an immobilizer procedure requires the DME ISN. The engine designation alone won’t tell you which adapter to grab, so identify the ECU model and chip family first.
| Adapter | Supported Applications |
|---|---|
| N20 / N55 / B38 set | Selected N13, N20, N26, N55, N63, S63, and B38, depending on DME type |
| B48 / B58 bench adapter | Selected B48, B58, and associated MG1/MD1-family applications. Verify processor compatibility; not every B48 or B58 is identical. |
| X1 | Selected B37, B47, N47, and N57 EDC17 variants, including EDC17C50, EDC17C76, EDC17C56, and EDC17CP49, where supported |
| X2 | Selected N47/N57 EDC17C41 and EDC17CP45 |
| X3 | BMW i-series BMSX (ME172) |
| X4 | MINI N12 (MEV172) and N14 (MED172) |
| X5 | Selected N47 EDC17C06 / EDC17CP02 |
| X7 | Selected N57 EDC17CP09 |
| X8 | BMW N45 (ME1721) and N46 (MEV1721) |
If you’re looking for an X6, you won’t find one. There’s no X6 in Yanhua’s list of X-series interface boards. The boards are sold one at a time or in combinations, depending on the package.
Additional MSV/MSD Interface Boards
Module 27 uses dedicated port boards for MSV80, MSD80/MSD81, MSD85/MSD87, and MSV90. Separate interface-board families also exist for MSV70, MSS60/MSS65, and MEV9+ DME data and cloning work. You can’t swap these with the X-series diesel and MINI adapters, so check the board against the DME before you order.
ACDP BMW Licenses and Authorizations You Might Miss
This is where most surprises happen. Owning a module or an adapter doesn’t mean you have every right you need to finish the job.
- MSV/MSD DME ISN license: Put this on your buying checklist as its own line item. Don’t assume a DME adapter or Module 3 includes all MSV/MSD ISN reading rights. Confirm the module/license combination and the supported MSV/MSD DME before you buy.
- DME cloning authorization: Selected BMW DME cloning operations require an additional ECU cloning license. ISN reading and DME cloning are different functions.
- Specialized OBD ISN authorization: Certain supported DME families have additional OBD-reading options and authorizations. Confirm the current license name, what it covers, and your ACDP generation before ordering.
For every job, break the work into four steps: (1) reading the ISN, (2) writing or synchronizing immobilizer data, (3) cloning the DME, and (4) programming the key. Each step can require a different purchase.
FAQ
Q: What does ACDP Module 38 do?
Module 38 supports selected key functions on newer G-body BMWs with BDC2, BDC3, and BCP systems. BDC2 key learning, BDC2 all-keys-lost, and BDC3/BCP original-key copying are separate functions that may need different boards and authorizations. Pick up the antenna test adapter too, so you can test keys.
Q: Do I need a separate license to read BMW DME ISN with ACDP?
Often, yes. Module 3 or a DME adapter doesn’t automatically cover all MSV/MSD ISN reading rights, and DME cloning requires its own ECU cloning license. Confirm the exact module/license combination for the DME before buying.
Q: Which ACDP adapter do I need for a B48 or B58 DME?
The B48/B58 bench adapter covers selected B48, B58, and associated MG1/MD1-family applications. Not every B48 or B58 ECU is identical, so verify the processor before you order.
Q: What’s the difference between ACDP Module 2 and Module 31?
Module 2 covers supported FEM and earlier BDC key programming, sometimes on the bench. Module 31 adds supported F-chassis BDC immobilizer operations through OBD, with a DoIP adapter where required. Module 31 doesn’t replace every Module 2 function.
Q: Is there an ACDP X6 adapter?
No. The X-series interface boards are X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X7, and X8. There’s no X6 in that list.
Because ACDP is modular, you can take on a broad range of specialized BMW jobs, as long as you buy the capabilities you need. The goal is to avoid finding out at the vehicle that an adapter or license is missing.
